3rd Annual Economics & Finance Forum: Can Private Corporations Do Good and Make Money?

Speakers:

Antoinette Eltz ’00 is Director of Client Relations at Hermes Investment Management, an asset management firm based in London with approximately £33 billion in AUM. She is responsible for building and developing relationships with Hermes’ clients across multiple distribution channels.

Prior to joining Hermes, Antoinette worked as a Senior Sales Director at Twelve Capital, an independent investment management company focusing on clients in the UK and Switzerland. She was also a Vice President at Pacific Investment Management Company (PIMCO), focusing on account and product management. Antoinette has also had experience in proprietary trading, and worked as a Summer Associate at both McKinsey & Company and UBS Warburg.

Antoinette received her MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in with a concentration in Operations Management in 2005. She graduated from Swarthmore with a BA in Biology

Gustavo Schwed ’84 is a Professor of Management Practice at NYU-Stern, where he teaches courses in private equity deal analysis and finance. He is also a Visiting Lecturer at Princeton University, and currently serves as a member of Swarthmore’s Board of Managers, chairing the Finance Committee.

Prior to joining NYU-Stern, Gustavo worked in London as a Managing Director at Providence Equity Partners, a private equity firm specializing in media, communications, and education with approximately $40 billion in AUM. While there, he led a number of European buyout transactions. He was also a Managing Director at Morgan Stanley Capital Partners, a private equity arm of Morgan Stanley, where he focused on Latin American private equity deals. Gustavo also spent three years in Brazil at Bassini, Playfair, & Associates, a private equity firm focusing on Latin American emerging markets.

Gustavo received his MBA from Stanford University in 1988. He graduated with High Honors from Swarthmore with a BA in Economics.

Robert Ottenstein ’82 is a Senior Managing Director and Partner at Evercore ISI, an investment banking advisory firm with offices in North America, Europe, South America, and Asia. His focus is primarily on the global beverages industry, and is responsible for equity research on the industry. He was named Runner-Up in Institutional Investor’s Beverages ranking in 2014.

Prior to joining Evercore ISI, Robert worked as the Global Head of Investor Relations at Anheuser-Busch InBev, shortly after InBev’s acquisition of Anheuser-Busch. He was also a Managing Director of both Equity Research and Investment Banking at Morgan Stanley, where he focused on the global chemicals and basic materials industries.

Robert received his MBA from Stanford University and his MA in PPE from the University of Oxford. He graduated from Swarthmore with a BA.

Redefine Her Street and Clarus Capital prese­­nts this annual conference to create an opportunity for Swarthmore alumni in the field of finance and economics to connect with other alumni, meet aspiring students, and impart lessons learned from their time in the industry. We hope to provide a forum to begin an open dialogue on a variety of topics, including industry outlook, personal experience, and career advice.

The conference will take place on Saturday, April 23rd from 9:30 AM – 5:00 PM in the Scheuer Room at Swarthmore College. The event will feature five sessions, with a designated student moderator for each.We hope the event will strengthen the already invaluable source of support and guidance that the Swarthmore community is to all of its members.  

Speakers:

Andy Haughwout ’83 is a Senior Vice President and Head of the Microeconomic Studies Department in the Research and Statistics Group at the New York Fed. He is a coeditor of the Liberty Street Economics blog and a coeditor of the Bank's Economic Policy Review. In addition to his duties at the Bank, he is a Penn Institute for Urban Research Scholar and serves on the Advisory Board of the Journal of Regional Science. He is a past Chair of the North American Regional Science Council and the Federal Reserve System Committee on Regional Analysis. Prior to joining the New York Fed, Andy served as Assistant Professor and Director of the Urban and Regional Planning program at Princeton University. He holds a BA in Economics from Swarthmore College and a PhD from the University of Pennsylvania.

Jim Marks ’85 has over three decades of experience as an innovator and executive in financial technology. He helped to start and manage SNL Financial before becoming the first Wall Street equity analyst to focus on financial technology with Credit Suisse First Boston in 1996. He was a founder and President of the financial and legal technology investment bank, Marks Baughan, from 2004 to 2013. He also served as President of Belzberg Technologies and WineAccess, as well as a director at Fiberlink, Folio Dynamix, and Keystone Risk Partners. He was a McCabe Scholar at Swarthmore, graduating with a B.A. in Art History.

Joe Corso ’02 graduated with a BA in Economics from Swarthmore. He has held various investment banking positions over the course of his career, in distinguished firms such as Janney Montgomery Scott and Thomas Weisel Partners. He is currently a Managing Director at Stifel, where he specializes in advising companies in the Semiconductor, Electronics Supply Chain, and Distribution spaces. 

Goreleigh Willis ’03 graduated Swarthmore as a double major in Economics and Political Science with Honors. He finished his MBA from Cornell University. Currently, he is an Investment Banking Associate at Lazard, where he is part of the media services and technology group. Previously, he was an associate at J.P. Morgan Private Bank, where he worked with ultra high net worth individuals to manage their wealth.

Mark Bode ’80 graduated from Swarthmore with a B.A. in Political Science and received his MBA with Honors in Finance from the University of Chicago’s Booth School of Business. Mark is currently Founder and CEO of the Utopia Group, an early stage medical device company. Previously, he was a founder and CFO of Lyric Capital Venture Partners, a top quartile venture fund, and CFO of two venture backed startup companies in software and finance. He began his career in technology investment banking in New York and San Francisco with Solomon Smith Barney and Prudential Bache Securities. Through his career he has worked with over 70 companies and done over $3.2b in transactions.

Dan Oppenheim ’96 majored in Economics at Swarthmore. He is currently a Managing Director at Zelman & Associates in San Francisco. As a senior equity research analyst, he covers real estate investment trusts (REITs). Previously, he was a Director in the Equity Research Department at Credit Suisse, where he covered the housing industry, including homebuilders and building products companies. In 2007, Oppenheim ranked second on the Institutional Investor “All-America Research Team” for his coverage of Homebuilders and Building Products. He joined Credit Suisse in 2008 from Banc of America Securities, where he was a Principal, and he has held positions in Wellington Management Company and Goldman Sachs.

Eliana Cohen '17

Eliana is a junior pursuing a special major in organizational behavior. She will be interning at BlackRock, the world's largest asset management firm, on their US Wealth Advisory team. She is unable to attend today's session but is excited about helping Swatties apply their liberal arts educations to the finance recruitment process. She is also happy to provide advice to students who do not come out of technical backgrounds or do not have traditional finance-oriented experiences, particularly if they are interested in pursuing client-facing careers in the future.

Spencer Friske '16

Spencer will be working at Bain & Company as an Associate Consultant. Last summer, he worked for Bank of America Merrill Lynch as a Public Finance Investment Banking intern with rotations in both the healthcare and transportation groups. At BAML, his primary responsibilities included implementing debt service models and developing investor presentations.

Shen Huang '16

Shen Huang worked at J.P. Morgan Private Bank in New York this past summer, supporting the Portfolio Management Group on the Solutions side of the bank. His team was responsible for managing, rebalancing, and implementing all tactical calls on macro traded portfolios on the Private Bank's platform. He will be returning to J.P. Morgan full time and join the Global Investment Opportunities group. This team  seeks to provide sophisticated ultra high net worth individuals with opportunistic, absolute return investment ideas by facilitating institutional level of execution across asset classes globally.

Jiho Jang '16

Jiho Jang will be joining Bank of America Merrill Lynch as a full-time investment banking analyst this summer; last summer he worked at the Energy & Power Investment Banking Group and focused on M&A and IPO transactions. He's also interested in economic development and poverty alleviation.  

Stephanie Kestelman '16 skestel1@swarthmore.eduStephanie is a senior, majoring in economics and statistics. She will be joining PwC (PricewaterhouseCoopers) this coming August, as a Management Consultant in their Financial Services sector.  She interned at PwC during the summer of 2015. She worked for a major credit card processor, reviewing their merchant portfolio and helping the client manage its exposure to risk. Stephanie has also worked as a research assistant and intern with the Philadelphia City Planning Commission.

Christine Kim '17

Christine is currently a junior, majoring in Political Science and minoring in Music. Her most recent experiences include being invited as a finalist for three investment banking training programs from bulge bracket firms (J.P Morgan Chase, Barclays, and UBS). She accepted an offer from Bank of America Merrill Lynch to join its Investment Banking 2016 Summer Analyst program. Christine is currently Student Body President, a Richard Rubin Scholar and Swarthmore Foundation Grant recipient. She was honored in June 2015 as a National Association for Asian American Professionals Philadelphia Chapter Scholarship recipient, and she was honored in February 2016 as a Scholarship of Distinction recipient from Bank of America Merrill Lynch

Phyllis is a junior economics major at Swarthmore College, who will be joining JPMorgan Chase & Co as a summer analyst. She is active on campus as the founder of the Swarthmore College branch of 180 Degrees Consulting and the Swarthmore Consulting Group, and she is also a Career Peer Advisor. During the summer internship recruitment season, she got offers in both finance and consulting.Arjun Raghuraman '16

Arjun Raghuraman is an Honors Economics Major with a Minor in Statistics. This past summer, he worked in the Investment Banking Division of William Blair, working on live M&A deals and IPOs for software companies. He has also interned at Soros Fund Management and TIAA-CREF, in their risk and asset management divisions respectively.

Kathy will be working at Deloitte Consulting next year as a Strategy and Operations Business Analyst. Last summer, though, she interned at Deutsche Bank as a Markets Analyst Intern (aka Sales and Trading intern) and had rotations through the interest rate derivatives sales desk and the asset structuring desk. Throughout the summer, she conducted several research and analytical projects for each of her teams and shadowed numerous traders and salespeople across the trading floors.

Fangling Wu '17

Fangling is a junior with double majors in economics and statistics. She will be interning at Perella Weinberg Partners (PWP), one of the top global boutique investment banks, as a summer analyst in New York. She received an early offer from the firm's accelerated process, and could offer valuable insights on how to prepare for the recruitment in the financial services sector (investment banking in particular).
